With the rapid development of electric mobility, more and more newly developed battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and also the first e-trucks and e-buses are hitting the roads, which is also driving the development of the charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. Not only in terms of the number of charging points installed, but also in terms of requirements for charging stations and charging electronics, such as noise levels, robustness and charging speed. Furthermore, new trends such as bidirectionality or megawatt charging will have additional impact on charging electronics and semiconductor selection. This will impact not only the off-board DC charger, but also the on-board charger (OBC) and connected electronics such as the battery management system (BMS). This keynote addresses the changes and shows why wide bandgap (WBG) semiconductors are key to the changing requirements and new trends in electric vehicle charging.
